F1 Visa and Work Opportunities

F1 Visa and Work Opportunities

The F-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows international students to study full-time at accredited U.S. institutions (universities, colleges, high schools, language training programs, etc.).

1. On-Campus Work (During Studies)

  • Allowed: Yes
  • Limit: Up to 20 hours/week during academic sessions, full-time in breaks
  • Where: Only on-campus (library, cafeteria, research assistant, etc.)
  • No special authorization needed from USCIS, but notify your DSO (Designated School Official)

2. CPT (Curricular Practical Training)

  • During studies, work that is part of your curriculum (internships, co-ops)
  • Tied to your major
  • Can be part-time (≤20 hrs) or full-time
  • Must be approved by your university (not USCIS)
  • If you do 12 months of full-time CPT, you’re not eligible for OPT

3. OPT (Optional Practical Training)

  • Most important post-study work option
  • Allows up to 12 months of work in your field of study
  • Can be done during (pre-completion) or after (post-completion) your degree
  • Apply up to 90 days before graduation
  • Must apply to USCIS and get an EAD (Employment Authorization Document)

4. STEM OPT Extension

  • If your degree is in a STEM field (Science, Tech, Engineering, Math)
  • You can apply for a 24-month extension, after the 12-month OPT
  • Total: Up to 36 months (3 years) of work in the U.S.
  • Employer must be E-Verified

Important Notes

  • F-1 students cannot work off-campus without proper authorization.
  • Unauthorized work can result in visa termination.
  • OPT and STEM OPT require strict timelines for application.
  • After OPT/STEM OPT, you may need an H-1B (work visa) to continue staying and working

Example Timeline

  • Let’s say you do a Bachelor’s in Computer Science (4 years):

    • Year 1–4: On-campus work (20 hrs/week), maybe CPT internship in Year 3
    • After graduation:
      • 12 months OPT
      • Then 24 months STEM OPT
    • Total work: 3 years after graduation, with possible H-1B afterward
